Short manual

Recommendations

  • Use regulated power supply with output voltage from 7.5V to 12V. Less wouldn’t work, more causes that the device produces more heat, so the best choice would be something like 8 or 9V.
  • Don’t leave the SatanDisk without power connected to your ST, when the ST is turned on. It will probably cause that the ST will be held in reset state…
  • If you have two SatanDisks connected to your ST, both of them must be turned on. If one will be off, the ST may stay in reset mode for that time.
  • If you use two SatanDisks at once or a SatanDisk and other ACSI device at once, please use other ACSI IDs than 0. (Your SatanDisk will have the ID set to 0 by default).
  • Keep the SatanDisk and the data cable between SatanDisk and your ST as far away from your monitor as possible. It may cause some interference. Idealy it would be 10 cm or more away from monitor.
  • Don’t change the SD/MMC card in the SatanDisk when the SatanDisk is turned on.The SatanDisk initializes the SD/MMC card only when you turn it on. Switching the card with the SatanDisk turned on may not work.
  • Insert the SD/MMC card only when the SatanDisk is off.
  • Not all SD/MMC cards will probably work with SatanDisk, but I think that most of them will.
  • Some people reported partition losses when turning on and off the SatanDisk. Even if this never happened to me, my recomendation is that you should make an image of your card on your PC using a card reader to prevent the data losses.

 

Start the SatanDisk 

  1. Insert one end of the cable to SatanDisk
  2. Insert the other end of the cable do the the Hard Disk connector of your ST
  3. Insert the SD/MMC card into the SatanDisk
  4. Plug the power supply (from 7V to 12V) cable in the SatanDisk. You should see the blue LED of SatanDisk go on and off right after the power-up. If the blue LED will not go off after a while (less than 2 seconds), something is wrong with your SD/MMC card and/or communication of SatanDisk with the card.
  5. Turn on the ST.
  6. You should see the blue LED of SatanDisk flash when the ST is booting when the ST reads the boot sector from the card in the SatanDisk.

 

Finish the work

  1. Close the open application(s)
  2. Turn of the ST
  3. Take out the power supply cable.

 

Partition your SD/MMC card with HDDRUTIL and install the HDDRIVER to make it bootable
Note: Refer to HDDRIVER manual for more details and explanations. This is just a brief description to get you going.

  1. Start your ST with SatanDisk running.
  2. Load the HDDRIVER from a floppy (this needs to be done because HDDRUTIL uses HDDRIVER loaded in memory to do some of it’s functions.
  3. Load the HDDRUTIL
  4. In HDDRUTIL select Harddisk (Media) and Format
  5. Select the SatanDisk device and answer ‘Yes’, ‘OK’, ‘Continue’ on all questions to get the card formated.
  6. When a window with a title ‘Sector test’ appears, you can press the ‘Esc’ to skip this test.
  7. Select Harddisk (Media) and Partition
  8. Select the SatanDisk device.
  9. Enter the wanted partition sizes and types and answer ‘Yes’, ‘OK’, ‘Continue’ on all questions to get the card partitioned.
  10. Wait until the partitioning is finished and then RESTART YOUR ST.
  11. Load the HDDRIVER from a floppy (this needs to be done because HDDRUTIL uses HDDRIVER loaded in memory to do some of it’s functions.
  12. Load the HDDRUTIL
  13. In HDDRUTIL select Harddisk (Media) and Initialize partition.
  14. Select the first partition (C:) and answer ‘Yes’, ‘OK’, ‘Continue’ on all questions to get the partition initialized.
  15. Select File and Install HDDRIVER
  16. Select the first partition (C:) and answer ‘Yes’, ‘OK’, ‘Continue’ on all questions to install the HDDRIVER on that partition.
  17. Restart your ST and it should boot from that partition.

Note: You may need to adjust some parameters of that installed HDDRIVER using the HDDRUTIL to allow it to boot from this ACSI device, this partition, etc. Please follow the steps bellow (‘Allowing to boot and to work with device on ACSI bus with HDDRIVER’).

 

Allowing to boot and to work with device on ACSI bus with HDDRIVER (v7.8)

The problem: You can see your device in HDDRUTIL when doing bus scan, but it won’t appear in the device list when you are trying to format or partition the device. Or the HDDRIVER boots from the floppy / ACSI device, but says ‘No partitions found’ even if you know that there are some partitions on that device.

Solution:

  1. Turn on the ST and load the HDDRIVER from floppy.
  2. Load the HDDRUTIL.
  3. In the main menu select Settings (Einstellungen), then Devices and partitions (Gerate und Partitionen).
  4. The HDDRUTIL may ask you where the ‘HDDRIVER.PRG’ or ‘HDDRIVER.SYS’ is located. You will have to point him to ‘HDDRIVER.PRG’ on the floppy.
  5. A dialog window will appear. Please select the desired device IDs you want to use (in case of ACSI select the devices from 0.0 to 0.7)
  6. Press the OK button of that dialog. Then the HDDRUTIL will write the settings into that ‘HDDRIVER.SYS’ that you selected (on the floppy or on the device). If it won’t write anything, then something is wrong….
  7. Reset your ST and load the HDDRIVER to which you written the new settings
